Description

Two armies stand ready for war in this spectacular vintage ceramic chess set depicting what appears to be a Crusaders-versus-Saracens theme, with one side finished in creamy white with green and gold accents and the opposing side rendered in deep hunter green, both featuring hand-painted facial details of remarkable quality including expressive eyes, mustaches, and regal headwear on the major pieces. The white side fields a bishop bearing a cross-adorned mitre, a serene pale-skinned queen, and a darker-complexioned king wearing a green turban, while the green side mirrors the composition with equally detailed royalty and helmet-clad pawn soldiers sporting painted mustaches that mean business. Each hollow ceramic piece is substantial in size and weight, with a smooth unglazed ring on the base confirming ceramic construction, and the entire set of 32 pieces is cradled in a custom wooden storage tray fitted with individual cotton-padded compartments tied with red ribbon closures for protection during storage. The set rests on a gorgeous two-tone inlaid wood chessboard that doubles as the lid of a hinged wooden case secured by brass hardware, making this a fully self-contained collector's showpiece that is as impressive displayed on a shelf as it is across a game table.
