Description

This is a genuine antique wooden firkin-style sewing stand, a wonderfully utilitarian piece of early American domestic life that has aged into a flat-out charming conversation starter. The circular bentwood box body features cooperage-style banded staves held together with wooden pegs and iron wire fasteners, and the hinged lid is secured by two decorative iron butterfly clasps while a sweeping forged iron bail handle arches overhead with rustic authority. The whole affair sits atop three elegantly turned tripod legs in a noticeably newer and finer wood, suggesting the stand base was either a later addition or a period repair, which only adds to the piece's layered story. Measuring approximately 23 inches tall to the top of the box and 16 inches in diameter, this firkin retains its original fabric pincushion insert in the lid and shows honest age throughout, including surface cracking, patina, and wear that no reproduction could fake on its best day.

8. EXTENDED BIDDING: Bids placed near closing automatically extend the lot by 3 minutes until bidding stops.
