Historical Context & Maker Information This fine antique aide-mémoire (dance purse / memorandum case) was crafted by the renowned American silversmith firm William B. Kerr & Co. of Newark, New Jersey. Celebrated for high-end Art Nouveau vanity and desk accessories, Kerr stamped this piece along its inner silver frame with their signature axe mark flanked by crossed straps, alongside STERLING (.925 fine silver) and pattern number 4536. The front face displays intricate Art Nouveau repoussé scrollwork enclosing a central engraved "HD" monogram medallion, while the reverse features matching scrollwork framing an unengraved central cartouche.

Features & Craftsmanship Designed as an elegant Edwardian personal companion, this purse opens to reveal its original tan leather-lined interior complete with a card pocket, expanding flap compartments, a bevel-edged glass mirror, an intact notepad, and its original matching sterling silver mechanical writing pencil. Suspended from its original linked chatelaine chain, this piece served as a stylish notebook and compact purse for high-society women at social gatherings. Kerr produced these elaborate luxury accessories before being acquired by the Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1927.
