Description
When the law said no booze, doctors said hold my prescription pad -- and here is the glorious proof. This is an original 1925 Treasury Department United States Revenue Prescription Blank issued under the National Prohibition Act, Form No. 1403, Revised Feb. 1923, Book No. C 5156, Blank No. 3, Permit No. J1357. The prescription is made out to Mrs. Henry Kratz of Heasfield, Pennsylvania, dated January 26, 1925, with dosage instructions reading 'cup one tablespoonful every 4 hours' -- the classic medicinal whiskey workaround that kept pharmacists and doctors very busy during the dry years. The prescribing physician is listed as L.L. Ceore, M.D. of Heasfield, PA, with the druggist listed as E.J. Timmerman of Lansdale, PA, and the document bears an official orange embossed pharmacist seal. The reverse side shows bleed-through from an adjacent prescription in the book, with staining and age-appropriate wear that only adds to the charm of this remarkable piece of American social and legal history.
