This antique hand-operated water pump head was manufactured by Ward-Love Pump Corp. of Rockford, Illinois, one of the major names associated with America’s early 20th-century pump manufacturing industry. Cast with “WARD-LOVE PUMP CORP. ROCKFORD ILL.” and marked “2 BE,” this example features the classic pitcher pump form with a curved gooseneck operating handle, domed cap, and integral pouring spout. Constructed of heavy sand-cast iron with remnants of aged green paint and natural surface wear, the pump stands approximately 12 inches wide and 14 inches tall.
Originally designed for use atop shallow wells or cistern systems, pumps such as this allowed users to manually draw water through a leather plunger and valve system operated by the long curved handle. Rockford, Illinois, became widely recognized as the “Pump Capital of the World” during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, producing millions of agricultural and household water pumps for farms, kitchens, porches, and rural properties throughout the United States. The Ward-Love Pump Corporation emerged from the consolidation of prominent regional manufacturers and produced durable cast iron pumps during the 1920s and 1930s before electric water systems became commonplace.
This example retains strong industrial character with oxidized surfaces, age-related wear, and authentic early cast iron construction throughout. The sculptural form and original handle make it well suited for restoration, architectural salvage, farmhouse décor, garden installations, or conversion into a decorative fountain feature. A desirable piece of early American utility equipment and Midwest industrial history, measuring approximately 12 inches wide and 14 inches tall.
