Description
This Art Deco–era figural group depicts a stylized female figure accompanied by two deer, one reclining and one standing, arranged on a rectangular marble base. The composition emphasizes graceful movement and an idealized connection with nature, expressed through elongated proportions, a gently tilted head, and flowing drapery. The interaction between the figure and animals reflects decorative themes popular in European sculpture of the early 20th century.
The sculpture is constructed from mixed materials. The base is marble, composed of a lighter stone surface set within a darker plinth. The female figure and deer are cast metal, finished with applied polychrome and patinated surfaces. The figure’s dress is decorated in green-toned paint with stylized gold motifs, while the animals display a mottled brown patina. The head and hands of the female figure are finished in a lighter-toned surface treatment, likely painted over metal. The specific metal alloy cannot be confirmed, but the construction is consistent with decorative mixed-metal sculpture rather than solid bronze.
Stylistically, the sculpture aligns with French-inspired Art Deco decorative production of the 1920s–1930s. The modeling, surface decoration, and use of color suggest it was intended as a decorative interior object rather than a formally editioned fine art bronze. No artist signature, foundry stamp, or casting mark is present, indicating commercial production rather than a commissioned or limited-edition work.
Based on form, materials, and decorative finish, the sculpture may be associated with the broader output of French decorative foundries active during the Art Deco period, possibly in the manner of Menneville et Rochard. While this stylistic association is plausible, there is no physical marking or documented model to support a definitive attribution, and the artist must therefore be regarded as unknown.
The sculpture measures approximately 18 1/2 inches long by 6 1/4 inches deep and stands 16 1/2 inches tall. Overall condition appears consistent with age and display, with visible surface wear, paint loss, and patina variation on raised areas and extremities. The marble base shows natural veining and light handling marks. For auction or catalog purposes, this piece is most accurately described as an Art Deco mixed-metal figural group with marble base, artist unknown, produced after French decorative models.
