Description
This square oak end table reflects the bold massing and carved detail associated with American Jacobean Revival furniture of the early 20th century. The top features a deeply scalloped serpentine outline with a molded edge, supported by four substantial bobbin-turned legs. A shaped lower shelf mirrors the contour of the top, creating a balanced, architectural profile typical of revival styling from the interwar period. The overall form is compact yet visually weighty, measuring approximately 29 x 29 inches and 28 inches tall.
The table is constructed of quarter-sawn oak, displaying prominent medullary ray figure across the top surface. The pronounced “tiger oak” grain pattern was widely favored in American revival furniture and reinforces the period character of the piece. The top appears to be formed from joined oak boards, framed by a molded apron that provides structural depth beneath the surface. The legs are robustly turned and mortised into the apron, with the lower shelf fitted securely within the leg structure.
Each leg terminates in a gilt metal figural mount forming a stylized mask above a claw holding a glass ball caster. These cast mounts introduce a dramatic decorative element that blends medieval and Spanish-inspired motifs, a design tendency frequently seen in 1920s and 1930s revival interiors. The glass ball casters not only serve a functional purpose but also reflect the theatrical aesthetic popular during the period.
The combination of strong geometric proportions, heavy turnings, sculpted edges, and applied figural hardware places this table firmly within the American Jacobean Revival movement of the interwar era. Comparable examples were produced by Grand Rapids and other Midwestern manufacturers during the height of revival furniture production. The scale and craftsmanship suggest it was marketed as a quality occasional table intended for formal living room or parlor settings.
