Description
This tall ladder-back side chair is a showstopper with its dramatic finial-topped posts, four serpentine slats, and a beautifully woven rush seat in good vintage condition. The classic American country form places this piece firmly in the early-to-mid 19th century tradition, and the warm cherry or maple tone gives it a richness that commands attention in any room.
The Federal-style armchair is the undisputed aristocrat of this trio, boasting a superbly carved vase-and-acanthus splat centered within a shield-form back, flanked by scrolled rosette details and reeded top rail. The fruit wood construction -- likely cherry or fruitwood -- shows beautiful patina and worm-point character marks consistent with genuine age and use. Curved swept arms and a padded upholstered seat cushion in a gold brocade damask fabric complete the picture.
The bow-back Windsor side chair rounds out this lot with clean, unfussy Scandinavian-leaning lines and a light natural wood finish that reads almost mid-century modern despite the traditional form. Slender spindles fan from a curved bow rail to a solid saddle seat, and the splayed leg stance gives it that signature Windsor stability. In excellent structural condition with a lighter, blonde wood tone that sets it apart from its darker companions.
