This classic piece of American utility pottery is a quintessential example of late 19th-century stoneware. Dating approximately from 1880 to 1910, this one-gallon jug features a stout, wheel-thrown body with visible throwing ridges that showcase its handcrafted origins. Standing approximately 11 inches tall with a 7-inch diameter, the vessel retains its original "pulled" handle, which remains firmly attached to the shoulder and neck, reflecting the durable craftsmanship of the era.
The jug is finished in a traditional creamy-white Bristol glaze, a finish that became the industry standard at the turn of the century for its clean, sanitary appearance. The surface exhibits a beautiful, authentic network of fine crazing throughout, a desirable characteristic in antique ceramics caused by over a century of natural expansion and contraction. The base remains unglazed and features a rustic, toasted tan coloration, typical of pieces fired in a coal or wood-burning kiln where the bottom was left bare to prevent sticking to the kiln floor.
Offered in excellent "farmhouse" condition, this piece displays a wonderful patina of age with minor, honest wear. Small, scattered chips around the spout and base provide a sense of history and utility without compromising the structural integrity of the piece. While unsigned, the form and glaze are indicative of major Midwestern potteries of the period, such as those found in the Ohio River Valley or Red Wing, Minnesota. This is a versatile addition to any collection of primitive Americana or a perfect accent for a rustic kitchen display.
