Meet Mrs. Gamp, the rosy-cheeked nursing woman immortalized by Charles Dickens, rendered here as a plump and cheerful Toby jug standing in her signature black dress, yellow bonnet, and white apron. She clutches a wicker basket and her trusty umbrella, and her hat forms the spout of the pitcher. The base bears a maker's mark reading 'Wood' and 'England,' consistent with Wood & Sons pottery of Burslem, Staffordshire, and shows the crazing and patina expected of a mid-20th century piece. She is a well-loved example of the classic literary Toby tradition, full of personality and in solid displayable condition.
Now meet the seated gentleman known as 'Ls. Philpot,' as impressed directly into the rectangular base of this handsome Toby jug. He sits confidently in his green coat and ochre breeches, long blond hair flowing beneath a glossy dark brown tricorn hat that doubles as the spout. He holds a brown jug in his hands, a pipe at his side, and wears buckled shoes fit for an 18th-century tavern. The base also carries a printed maker's mark reading 'Toby' along with additional text consistent with Wood & Sons or a similar Staffordshire pottery, and the piece shows the warm crazing of an authentic vintage English earthenware jug.
