Description
Up for auction is a fascinating piece of vintage travel memorabilia: a Mid-Century camel saddle stool frame, traditionally styled after the classic riding and pack saddles of North Africa and the Middle East (often originating from Egypt or Turkey). Popularized during the golden age of jet-age tourism in the 1950s through the 1970s, these frames were expertly crafted to capture the authentic geometry of traditional desert saddles while being tailored for Western home decor. It serves as a fantastic conversation piece, bringing an instant touch of bohemian or eclectic charm to any living space.
The piece features a sturdy, multi-part wooden construction highlighted by prominent, diamond-shaped pommels at either end and elegant, sweeping arched legs designed to mimic the shape that would straddle a camel's hump. Decorative brass-toned metal studs line the outer frame in a geometric pattern, adding a rustic, hand-wrought aesthetic to the rich grain of the wood. It comes complete with its original, custom-fitted flat wooden seat insert, which detaches smoothly to showcase the underlying architecture of the frame or can be readily topped with a cushion of your choice to create a functional footstool, vanity seat, or low bench.
In terms of size and presence, this versatile accent piece measures approximately 23 inches long by 19 inches wide, and stands 18 inches tall. Its compact yet substantial footprint makes it an ideal fit for an entryway, a cozy reading nook, or tucked neatly next to a mid-century armchair. The dimensions offer excellent structural stability while remaining lightweight enough to be easily moved and repurposed around your home as needed.
This vintage item is in good overall condition, showcasing a beautiful, aged patina with light surface scratches and wear consistent with its 50 to 70 years of age. The wood remains structurally sound, and the original twisted leather ties securing the side rails have dried and hardened over time, lending a wonderful sense of historical authenticity to the piece. Please review all accompanying gallery photographs to closely inspect the fine details, craftsmanship, and exact condition before placing your bids.
