Description
This framed botanical print depicts Magnolia grandiflora, commonly known as the Southern Magnolia, rendered with a central white bloom and surrounding elongated green leaves. The composition follows the formal structure typical of 18th-century natural history illustration, presenting the specimen against a light ground with emphasis on leaf veining and botanical accuracy. The lower portion includes the printed title “Magnolia” along with the original Latin descriptive inscription.
The inscription reads: “foliis ovato oblongis ad basin et apicem angustis, utrinque virentibus,” reflecting the early descriptive naming conventions used prior to the standardization of Linnaean binomial nomenclature. The print is double-matted with a wide dark green mat and inner gold liner, housed under glass in a gold-tone frame with continuous foliate detailing. The overall framed measurement is approximately 26 ¼ inches by 32 ¼ inches.
The image is after the work of Mark Catesby (1683–1749), the English naturalist responsible for producing the first fully illustrated color survey of North American flora and fauna. His publication, The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, was highly influential in the development of botanical and ornithological illustration and later informed the work of naturalists such as John James Audubon
