Description

This is the Royal Doulton 'Old Salt' large character jug, model number D6551, copyright 1960, produced by Doulton and Co. Limited, and bearing multiple registration numbers on the base including Rd No 409603, Rd No 866138, and Rd No 572780. The jovial, weathered sea captain's face is rendered in exceptional detail, complete with a bushy white beard, rosy cheeks, piercing blue eyes, and a cobalt blue naval cap adorned with a gold shell badge. The handle is a showstopper in its own right, a beautifully sculpted mermaid with long blonde hair, a peachy complexion, and a teal scaled tail that curves elegantly down to meet the navy blue rocky base, which bears the embossed title 'Old Salt.' The interior glaze is a warm cream, the condition appears excellent with vibrant colors and no visible chips or cracks, and the piece carries the full Royal Doulton lion and crown backstamp, making it a highly desirable addition to any serious character jug collection.
