First up is a stunning vintage etching of Gallant Fox, the 1930 Triple Crown champion, rendered with breathtaking detail by listed artist R.H. Palenske and published by B&B. The composition features a magnificent close-up portrait of the great bay stallion with racing scenes depicted below, hand-signed in pencil with the title inscribed in the lower left margin. The paper shows age-appropriate toning, foxing, and water staining along the top edge, but the etching plate image itself remains crisp and bold. Housed in its original walnut-toned wood frame with glass, this is a serious piece of American thoroughbred racing history from the golden age of horse racing art.
The second piece is a large vintage black-and-white photograph of Black Jack, the famous riderless horse who carried the boots-reversed caparisoned saddle in the funeral processions of Presidents Kennedy, Eisenhower, and Johnson. The photo shows the magnificent horse in full ceremonial tack alongside a uniformed military handler in front of what appears to be an official building. Matted in a patriotic red, white, and blue frame with a multi-layered presentation mat, the piece carries tremendous historical weight. Taped to the verso is a preserved newspaper clipping containing the poem "The Riderless Horse" by Michael Drury, noting Black Jack's death on February 6, 1976, adding a deeply poignant layer of provenance to this moving piece of American military and presidential history.
