Description

This Singer Model 221-1, commonly known as the “Featherweight,” is a compact portable electric sewing machine finished in the classic black enamel with gold decals. The machine features the Egyptian Scroll faceplate, numbered tension dial, and straight-stitch configuration characteristic of this model. The body is constructed of cast aluminum, contributing to its lighter weight while maintaining structural rigidity. It measures approximately 15 inches long, 7 inches deep, and 10 ½ inches high, making it one of the most portable full-capacity machines produced during its era.

The 221-1 designation indicates production at Singer’s Elizabethport, New Jersey facility. Based on the presence of the numbered tension dial (standard after 1937) and the ornate Egyptian Scroll faceplate (generally phased out around the late 1940s), this example likely dates between 1937 and approximately 1950. The motor is labeled Singer Sewing Motor Cat. 3-120, 110–120 volts, A.C. & D.C., manufactured by The Singer Manufacturing Co., Elizabethport, N.J., Made in U.S.A. The included motor controller (foot pedal) is marked Singer Sewing Motor Controller, Simanco, Part No. 194584, further confirming mid-20th-century production.

The machine retains its original portable configuration, including the Bakelite-style foot controller and specialized three-pin power connection. Also included are multiple Singer attachments in the original green Singer Sewing Machine Attachments box, two keys, accessory components, and the printed instruction manual for the Singer Portable Electric Sewing Machine 221-1. The machine is housed in its original black textured carrying case with metal latches and handle, designed for transport and storage.

The Singer Featherweight 221-1 remains one of the most sought-after vintage sewing machines due to its precision straight stitch, mechanical reliability, and portability of approximately 11 pounds. Its all-metal internal construction, simple maintenance design, and consistent stitch quality made it a preferred machine for home sewing and quilting. This example represents a complete mid-20th-century portable sewing system, retaining its original accessories, documentation, and case.

1. All items are sold where is, as is.

2. Once payment is completed for item(s) won, the ability to schedule a pick-up time will become available. Scheduling a pick-up time is required.

3. There will be a $20 fee assessed per item not picked up at that time that will be collected prior to bidding again at our auctions. Unlike retail, we do not have the option to store your item. If the item is larger than a standard suitcase (22" x 14" x 10"), we will charge $50 to the card on file per item to move the item.

4. Please plan accordingly as items not picked up are considered "abandoned". Do not bid if you cant pick up this day.

5. You are responsible for ensuring you collect all items at pickup.

6. Legacy uses "Popcorn" or "Extended" bidding. This means if a bid comes in at the last second, it is extended 3 minutes. This is like a live auctioneer saying, "going once" to ensure all bids are exhausted prior to closing.

7. We charge a 12% flat buyers premium on all items.

8. We charge KY State Tax with the exception of vehicles which is collected at the DMV.

9. You must bring help to pickup any items. We can recommend movers upon request. Also, please bring tools for items that require disassembly.
