Description

All aboard for one of the most dramatic steam train scenes ever committed to print -- C.W. Vittitow's 'The General,' a stunning limited edition chromolithograph-style color print numbered 776 of just 3,000, Plate XII. The image captures a powerful 19th-century W.S.A.R.R. steam locomotive thundering through an autumn landscape at golden hour, smoke billowing majestically against a painted sky that Currier and Ives themselves would tip their hats to. The print is professionally double-matted in cream and hunter green and housed in a substantial two-tone wood frame -- an inner oak liner with a bold walnut outer molding -- measuring approximately 37 inches wide by 29 inches tall, with a hanging chain and period-appropriate twist-hook hardware on the back. Condition is very good with minor dust and light scuffs to the frame, and the print itself shows slight age toning to the mat, all consistent with a well-loved vintage piece that has clearly graced a wall of distinction.
