    Description

Antique Four-Gallon American Stoneware Beehive Jug This substantial piece of 19th-century Americana is a classic "beehive" style stoneware jug, so named for its distinctively sloped, conical shoulder. Measuring an impressive 17 1/2 inches tall with an 11-inch diameter, this vessel was designed for high-capacity storage of spirits, vinegar, or oils. The front is prominently marked with a sharp, cobalt blue stenciled "4", indicating its four-gallon capacity. The jug features a hand-applied "pulled" strap handle and still retains what appears to be an original or period-correct wooden cork, adding significantly to its display appeal.

The jug showcases a striking two-tone glaze transition: a rich, dark brown Albany-slip glaze across the top and shoulder, which gives way to a creamy-white Bristol-glazed body. This "double-glaze" technique was highly popular during the late 1800s, providing both a durable finish and a decorative aesthetic. The body displays a fine, tight network of all-over crazing, a testament to its authentic age and decades of storage in a cellar or farmhouse environment. The underside is unglazed, showing the raw, dark-fired clay and "kiln grit" expected of genuine antique stoneware.

Presented in excellent antique condition, this jug possesses a commanding presence and a wonderful "untouched" character. The stoneware body is remarkably intact for its size, showing only minor, expected surface wear and small "flea bite" chips along the base and shoulder rim consistent with a century of utility. This large-scale piece is perfect for a floor display or as a centerpiece in a collection of primitive crocks and jugs. Its bold stenciled number and iconic silhouette make it a premier example of American folk-pottery history
