This mid-century ceramic “Gurgling Fish” pitcher is a classic example of the novelty nautical barware popular during the 1950s and 1960s. Produced for the American giftware market, the pitcher features the iconic upward-facing fish form with a curled tail handle and textured scale body finished in rich cobalt blue, white, and brown majolica-style glazes. The sculpted wave base and hand-painted details give the piece strong coastal and tiki-era decorative appeal.
Often referred to as a Gluggle Jug or Gurgle Fish pitcher, these vessels are known for the distinctive “glug glug” sound created when liquid is poured. The sound occurs as air moves through the hollow tail handle and escapes through the liquid inside the pitcher. This functional novelty feature made these pitchers especially popular as conversation pieces for home bars, beach houses, and mid-century entertaining spaces.
The multicolored glaze treatment is considered more desirable among collectors than later solid-color examples, and the overall design closely follows the highly collectible Japanese export fish pitchers commonly produced during the postwar era. The pitcher measures approximately 7 inches at its widest point and 8.5 inches tall. An eye-catching example of vintage nautical décor and functional ceramic art.
