This vintage Mobo Bronco riding horse was manufactured by D. Sebel & Co. of Erith, Kent, England, and represents one of the most recognizable children’s riding toys of the post-war era. Constructed from heavy pressed steel with lithographed decorative details, the horse features its original spotted finish, colorful saddle blanket graphics, molded mane and tail, and integrated stirrup propulsion system. The circular chest decal marked “IT STEERS!” identifies this as a later steering-capable example, a feature introduced by Mobo in 1950. The horse measures approximately 27 inches long and 30 1/2 inches tall.
Unlike traditional rocking horses, the Mobo Bronco was designed with an innovative mechanical riding action that allowed children to propel the toy forward by pressing down on the stirrups while seated on the saddle. By varying pressure between the stirrups, the rider could also steer the horse, making the Bronco one of the more advanced and entertaining ride-on toys of its time. Examples such as this were produced from approximately 1950 through 1971, though the lithographed paint treatment and overall styling are especially associated with 1950s production.
This example retains substantial original character with age-related wear, oxidation, paint loss, surface scratches, and patina consistent with decades of use and storage. The pressed steel body, internal spring mechanism, and original wheels remain present, making it an appealing display piece for collectors of vintage toys, English tin toys, pedal and ride-on toys, or mid-century children’s memorabilia. Measures approximately 27 inches long and 30 1/2 inches tall.
