First up is Cedar Waxwing on Spring Dogwood, a charming oval print featuring two warm-toned Cedar Waxwings perched among white dogwood blossoms, reproduced from original artwork by noted wildlife illustrator Rudolph Freund and manufactured by Turner Mfg. Co. of Chicago, Illinois. The print sits within a convex glass oval mount surrounded by a beaded gold inner frame, all set against a slate-grey mat adorned with four ornate brass corner embellishments in a laurel-wreath motif. The whitewashed wood outer frame is topped with a brass ring hanger, and the backing carries the original product label with model number G745 and a Patent Pending stamp, confirming its mid-century American production date.
The companion piece is Rose Breasted Grosbeak on Fall Dogwood, also by Rudolph Freund and Turner Mfg. Co., depicting a striking black-headed, rose-chested Grosbeak alongside a smaller speckled bird perched on autumn dogwood branches with red berries. It shares the identical shadowbox treatment, convex oval glass, beaded gold surround, slate mat, brass corner ornaments, and ring hanger, making it a perfect matching set. Both frames measure 9x11 inches as stamped on the backing, and while the kraft paper dust covers show age-related wear and staining consistent with their vintage, the prints and decorative elements remain in very presentable condition.
