    Description

This  pair of stoneware jugs features a classic cylindrical lower body with a tapered shoulder and applied strap handle terminating at the neck. Each jug is finished in a rich, dark brown glaze over the exterior, with an unglazed band encircling the shoulder where the glaze was wiped prior to firing. The mouths are slightly flared with hand-formed rims, and the bodies show subtle throwing rings and glaze variation consistent with wheel-thrown production. Both examples measure approximately 8 inches in diameter and 11 inches in height.

The form and glaze are characteristic of American utilitarian stoneware produced for whiskey, cider, or vinegar storage during the late 19th to early 20th century. The dark Albany slip-style glaze, combined with the salt- or alkaline-glazed surface and natural clay foot, was widely used by regional potteries across the Mid-Atlantic and Southern United States. The absence of impressed maker’s marks or stamped capacity indicators suggests production by a small regional pottery rather than a large branded manufacturer. Comparable examples were produced in states such as Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and North Carolina between approximately 1880 and 1920.

Condition reflects age and utilitarian use. There is visible glaze wear, scattered chips to the rims and bases, minor surface abrasions, and areas of exposed clay at high points. The bottoms show kiln marks and firing residue consistent with period production. Despite cosmetic wear, both jugs retain solid structural integrity and strong decorative presence. Their uniform size and closely related form indicate they were likely made by the same pottery and intended as a functional pair.
