This handmade wooden doll cradle was crafted in 1978 by an artisan identified as J.T. Smith, as noted by a carved inscription on the piece. Designed as toy furniture rather than a full-size infant cradle, it is sized for use with a child’s baby doll, commonly accommodating dolls in the 18-inch range. The cradle reflects traditional craftsmanship and was clearly intended as a functional and enduring play item.
The cradle is constructed from solid wood, likely pine, and finished in a warm reddish-brown stain with a glossy surface. Its design is simple and sturdy, featuring tall, slightly flared head and footboards and integrated wooden rockers attached to the base. The overall form is reminiscent of folk-art or Shaker-inspired designs, emphasizing practicality, balance, and clean lines without unnecessary ornamentation.
This piece represents a unique example of late-20th-century handcrafted toy furniture, the cradle’s value lies in its handmade quality, dated inscription, and visual appeal as a vintage doll accessory. It shows expected surface wear consistent with age and use and remains a charming decorative or collectible item, particularly appealing to those interested in folk art, vintage toys, or handcrafted wooden objects.
