This Seth Thomas tambour-style mantel clock features a wide, sweeping base and an arched top, giving it a classic early 20th-century silhouette. Measuring 17¼ inches wide, 5 inches deep, and 10 inches tall, this larger-format mantle clock makes a strong decorative statement while maintaining the traditional charm associated with Seth Thomas designs. The silvered metal dial displays bold black Arabic numerals and spade-style hands, all framed by a brass bezel and convex glass door.
Inside, the clock houses the respected Seth Thomas 89AL mechanical movement, marked with the ST diamond logo and Made in U.S.A. stamp on the back plate. This 8-day movement is designed to strike the hour on a coil gong and sound a single strike on the half hour. During inspection, the clock was wound and successfully chimed, confirming the functionality of the strike mechanism. The movement retains its original mainsprings, pendulum assembly, and internal gong.
The case shows wear consistent with age, particularly on the rear panel and lower edges, but remains structurally sound with an attractive dark finish on the façade. This piece offers a solid example of Seth Thomas craftsmanship and is suitable for collectors, restorers, or those looking for a statement mantel piece with mechanical character.
Note: One of the Feet was lost over time and was temporarily replaced with a wood screw (Pictured).
Manufacturer History
The Seth Thomas Clock Company, founded in 1813 in Plymouth Hollow, Connecticut (later renamed Thomaston in Thomas's honor), was one of the most respected American clock manufacturers. They were known for their quality craftsmanship and durability, transitioning from wooden to brass movements in the mid-19th century. The company produced a wide variety of clocks over its long history, from early tall case clocks and regulators to these popular mantel clocks.
