This antique 3-gallon stoneware jug is a classic piece of Louisville Pottery, a manufacturer based in Louisville, Kentucky. The distinctive blue cobalt stamp on the shoulder features a profile "Indian Head" logo surrounded by eight stars, which was the hallmark of their popular "Cherokee" line. The large numeral "3" above the logo indicates the jug's liquid capacity.
Based on the branding and manufacturing style, this jug likely dates to the first half of the 20th century, specifically between 1900 and 1938. During this period, the Louisville Pottery Company (sometimes referred to as Louisville Stoneware) produced a wide variety of functional kitchen and farmhouse wares, including crocks, churns, and jugs. The "Cherokee" line is particularly sought after by collectors today due to its iconic graphic and the company's long history, which traces its roots back to 1815.
The jug features a traditional two-tone glaze, with a dark "Albany-style" slip on the top and handle, transitioning to a lighter salt-glaze or bristol-glaze body. It stands approximately 13 to 14 inches tall and was designed for heavy-duty storage of liquids like water, vinegar, or spirits. Collectors value these pieces for their rustic aesthetic and historical significance in American pottery, with 3-gallon "Indian Head" jugs typically being categorized as a rare and desirable size for display.
