Description

This gloriously aged handmade quilt is a true time capsule of American domestic artistry, featuring a bold red and white color scheme anchored by striking central medallion-style blocks with a classic Bear Paw or Pinwheel variant construction surrounded by radiating scrappy triangle points. The inner field showcases a grid of red solid diamond accent squares alternating with intricate pieced blocks, all framed by a wide red solid sashing border and finished with a spectacular Flying Geese outer border pieced from what appears to be hundreds of tiny scrappy print triangles in every color and pattern imaginable, from Depression-era feedsack florals to shirting stripes and dotted novelty prints. Up close, the wear tells the real story: fraying edges, loose threads, and thinning fabric in areas speak to a quilt that was genuinely loved and used hard, not stored away, making it a perfect candidate for display, repurposing, or sympathetic restoration. The backing appears to be a plain off-white cotton, the batting is thin and soft with age, and the hand quilting throughout is done in simple diagonal grid stitching typical of late 19th to early 20th century American utilitarian quilt making.
