Description
This vintage Planters peanut countertop jar is a clear glass store display container accompanied by its original yellow metal lid featuring the Mr. Peanut graphic. The lid reads “PLEASE KEEP JAR ALWAYS COVERED,” “HELP TO KEEP PEANUTS FRESH,” and “THANKS! – PLANTERS,” with the classic top-hatted Mr. Peanut illustration at center. The jar itself is rectangular with softly rounded shoulders, a wide circular opening, and embossed vertical lettering spelling “PLANTERS” along the front panel. The overall form reflects mid-20th century retail display design intended for bulk peanut merchandising.
The underside of the jar is marked “1940 Leap Year Jar Made in the USA,” identifying it as a commemorative production piece from that year. The glass shows typical characteristics of commercial countertop jars, including thick molded walls and a slightly concave base. The lithographed metal lid displays age-appropriate wear around the rim and surface, while the glass exhibits light surface wear consistent with use in a store setting.
The jar measures approximately 7 ½ inches wide by 4 ½ inches deep and 9 ¾ inches tall. Its compact but substantial size makes it suitable for countertop display, collection, or decorative use. This example retains both the original jar and matching lid, presenting as a complete 1940 Planters advertising container.
