Up for auction is a beautiful piece of post-World War II Americana: a vintage Emerson Model 560 portable tube radio. Manufactured by the Emerson Radio & Phonograph Corp. of New York, N.Y., this mid-century gem dates back to circa 1947–1948, a historic era when manufacturers transitioned back to consumer goods using newly refined plastics. It features a striking, deep maroon/burgundy molded cabinet—often referred to by collectors as "Burgundy Bakelite" or early Celanese injection-molded plastic—paired with a gold-painted slide-rule dial, two black control knobs, and a classic woven gold fabric speaker grille. A stitched faux-leather handle is attached to the top, highlighting its iconic, portable "midget" tabletop design.
This charming "three-way" portable radio was innovatively engineered to run either on standard AC/DC wall outlets at home or via a battery pack for outdoor picnics. Opening the back cover reveals a fascinating glimpse into vintage engineering, featuring a built-in loop antenna on the drop-down door, the original speaker stamped with the Emerson logo, and the factory serial number tape (16-10357933). The interior also retains its original paper technical label detailing the standard post-war 4-tube lineup, though the bottom center of the label has a notable tear. The exterior housing shows light cosmetic surface scratches and minor wear consistent with its age, but it lacks major cracks, preserving its brilliant gloss and nostalgic mid-century aesthetic.
This compact tabletop unit measures approximately 9 inches wide, 7.5 inches high (excluding the handle), and 5 inches deep, making it the perfect size for display on a shelf, desk, or mantle. Whether you are looking to restore it to full playing condition or showcase it as a stellar decorative conversation piece, this classic Emerson radio is a fantastic addition to any vintage electronics or Art Deco collection. The radio is being sold as-is for parts, repair, or display; please review the high-resolution photographs carefully to assess the cosmetic condition and complete interior components before bidding.
