First up is a handsome fiddle-pattern ladle stamped 'C. RIECKEL' on the shank, most likely an American coin silver or silver-plate piece from the 19th century. The generous pear-shaped bowl is deep and dramatically curved, polished to a mirror shine with the honest patina of age. The fiddle handle terminates in a classic rounded top, and the proportions are substantial -- this is a ladle that means business at the punch bowl. Condition shows light surface scratching consistent with use and age, but overall presents beautifully.
The second ladle carries a full set of English hallmarks on the face of the fiddle handle, including what appears to be a maker's mark reading 'Bros,' a standard mark, a date letter, and a duty mark -- hallmarks consistent with British sterling silver production from the 19th century. The bowl is round and deeply cupped, mounted on a squared fiddle shank with a crisp, flat terminal. The back of the bowl shows a seamed join at the neck, a hallmark of period construction. Both ladles are displayed on decorative ceramic hand stands (one black, one ivory) which are included in the lot.
