This antique Acme Segment Hand Corn Planter was manufactured by the Acmeline Manufacturing Co. of Traverse City, Michigan, a company well known in the early 20th century for producing practical farm and garden implements. Originally operating as the Potato Implement Co., the company later became recognized for its “Acme” line of agricultural tools, including seed planters, sprayers, and garden equipment. This example retains its original painted wooden handle and clearly marked “Acme Segment Hand Corn Planter” branding along the shaft.
Designed as a manual “jab” style planter, this tool allowed farmers and gardeners to plant corn efficiently by hand in small fields, gardens, or tight areas where horse-drawn machinery could not easily operate. The user would push the pointed end into the soil, triggering the internal mechanism to drop seeds from the metal hopper directly into the ground. The segmented planting mechanism and spring-loaded foot assembly were innovative labor-saving features during the era.
This planter dates to approximately the early 1900s through the 1930s, before widespread mechanization replaced many hand-operated agricultural tools. The piece features a painted wood shaft, metal seed hopper, iron foot pedal assembly, and surviving manufacturer markings with visible age and wear consistent with long-term farm use. Today, these planters are sought after by collectors of antique farm equipment, Americana, and rustic agricultural décor.
