This collection features two different bottle cappers representing several decades of American home bottling and brewing history. Included is a cast iron Everedy “Gear Top” No. 5 Bottle Capper alongside a smaller aluminum “JET” Bench Bottle Capper. Together, the pair showcases the evolution of bottle-capping technology from heavy-duty industrial cast iron construction to lighter, more portable mid-century designs.
The larger capper is a vintage Everedy “Gear Top” No. 5 Bottle Capper manufactured by The Everedy Company of Frederick, Maryland. This model utilizes a rack-and-pinion geared mechanism operated by a side handle, allowing smooth downward pressure when sealing bottles. The patent number cast into the body, 1,421,633, dates to July 4, 1922, placing this example in the 1920s to early 1930s. Everedy cappers became especially popular during the Prohibition era for home bottling beverages including root beer, fruit juices, and homemade beer.
The second capper is a “JET” Bench Bottle Capper produced by Oregon Specialty Co. of Portland, Oregon. Dating primarily from the late 1940s through the 1960s, this model features a lightweight die-cast aluminum body and a twin-lever operating system. The claw-style gripping arms secure around the neck of the bottle while the center cap press seals the crown cap into place, making the design efficient and easy to operate for home bottling enthusiasts.
The Everedy capper measures approximately 22 inches tall and retains its original red painted finish with embossed lettering and visible wear consistent with age and use. The smaller JET capper provides a nice contrast in both design and materials, making this an appealing grouping for collectors of breweriana, antique kitchen tools, country store displays, or early American industrial equipment.
