This figural mallard duck decanter was produced in 1969 for Ballantine’s, created as a promotional container for their 14-year-old Scotch whisky. Modeled in a naturalistic reclining duck form, the decanter features a deep green head, yellow bill, and layered brown and gray feather detailing with a molded wing and tail. The form is both sculptural and decorative, reflecting the mid-20th-century tradition of novelty liquor decanters intended for display as much as use.
The piece is made of genuine Palfrey china, as indicated by the original oval “Genuine Palfrey China” foil label retained on the body. The underside and interior show the expected fine crazing typical of glazed ceramic decanters of this period, with additional original labeling identifying the whisky as 86 proof blended Scotch whisky, bottled in Dumbarton, Scotland, and imported by 21 Brands, Inc., New York. These details firmly place the decanter within late-1960s Ballantine’s production.
Measuring approximately 12 inches in length by 6½ inches in width, this decanter represents a classic example of 1960s barware and spirits advertising. Mallard duck forms were especially popular for Scotch and whiskey presentations during this era, appealing to both sporting and decorative tastes. Today, examples such as this are collected for their distinctive form, period graphics, and association with established Scotch whisky brands, making the piece well suited for display in a bar, den, or vintage advertising collection.
