This collection consists of four clamp-on, hand-crank meat grinders, including two Universal No. 1 models, one Universal No. 2, and one Climax No. 51. Each grinder features a cast iron body with embossed maker’s marks visible on the housings, including “UNIVERSAL” and “CLIMAX,” along with model numbers cast into the throat. The grinders retain their original-style wooden crank handles and table-mount screw clamps, designed to secure the units to a countertop or work surface.
All examples are traditional manual grinders with a funnel-shaped feed throat, horizontal grinding chamber, and side-mounted crank mechanism. The Universal models display the characteristic raised badge-style lettering, while the Climax No. 51 shows its name and number cast directly into the body. These grinders were commonly used in domestic kitchens and small butcher operations in the late 19th to early 20th century for grinding meats and other food products.
The grinders are constructed of cast iron with wooden handles and metal fasteners. Surface wear, oxidation, and areas of rust are visible throughout, consistent with age and prior use. Each retains its clamp assembly and crank handle. Condition reflects age and use, with visible patina and surface corrosion present on all four pieces.
