This vintage continuous hand sprayer, commonly referred to as a “Flit gun,” was designed for the application of insecticides and garden chemicals. The form consists of a rounded copper reservoir with a fitted pump assembly extending outward in a long cylindrical barrel. The nozzle and pump mechanism project from one end, while a wooden handle forms the grip at the opposite end. The overall design reflects utilitarian early 20th century agricultural and household equipment.
Based on comparable examples and construction details, this unit is consistent with a Blizzard Continuous Sprayer produced by D.B. Smith & Company of Utica, New York. These sprayers were engineered to deliver a steady stream on both the forward and backward strokes of the pump. Construction includes a copper reservoir tank, brass pump barrel and nozzle components, and a turned wooden handle. Surface patina, oxidation, and wear are visible throughout, consistent with age and use.
This example most likely dates to the 1930s to 1940s. The metal surfaces show areas of verdigris, discoloration, and finish wear, particularly along the reservoir and pump barrel. The base interior exhibits oxidation and darkened areas from age. The wooden handle shows expected wear and darkening.
As pictured, the sprayer measures approximately 17 inches in overall length and 6 1/2 inches tall from the bottom of the reservoir to the top of the nozzle assembly. Measurements are approximate and taken from the exterior as shown.
