This exceptional collection of four vintage American wooden advertising crates offers a perfect blend of rustic charm and authentic industrial history. Highly sought after by collectors, these classic rectangular boxes are perfect for farmhouse kitchen storage, unique display risers, or curated rustic decor. Each piece showcases beautiful natural wood grains, classic nailed construction, and faded typography that tells a rich story of mid-century American commerce and daily life.
The historical significance of this lot is rooted in prominent mid-century brands. Included are two 1930s–1940s "Mel-O-Bit American" cheese crates distributed by The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P), a staple house brand during the Depression and WWII eras. Alongside them is a "Kraft American" cheese box stamped "Kraft Cheese Company • Chicago, Ill.," precisely dating its manufacture to the post-WWII window of 1945–1948. The largest crate features a fascinating layered history: it boasts bold stenciling for Belknap Hardware’s "Blue Grass Gold & Red Michigan Pattern 36 In Bent Hdls," a handwritten manufacturing date of January 1946, and a partially intact paper shipping label addressed to O.L. Kincaid & Son in Jeffersontown, Kentucky.
The collection features distinct, highly functional dimensions across the two styles of boxes. The three 2 lb rectangular wooden cheese crates measure approximately 9" L x 3" W x 2 5/8" H, making them ideal containers for small organizing needs, silverware displays, or succulent planters. The larger, heavy-duty hardware crate measures approximately 11 1/4" L x 6" W x 6 1/2" H, providing a deeper, more substantial volume suitable for holding larger tools, books, or serving as a robust decorative base.
All four pieces are in good vintage condition, exhibiting an authentic, time-earned patina that cannot be replicated. They feature expected wear consistent with their age and original utility, including minor wood splits, surface oxidation on the original nails, and natural weathering that only enhances their character. Please review the high-resolution photographs to closely evaluate the stamp legibility, label remnants, and structural condition.
