Both examples are wheel-thrown stoneware with applied strap handles and rolled rims. The forms are compact and squat, measuring approximately 9 inches in diameter and 10½ inches tall, which places them in the range of 1- to 2-gallon capacity. The bodies show classic salt-glazed surfaces: one with a more uniform gray-beige tone and fine peppering, and the other with heavier iron spotting and warm brown-orange mottling concentrated around the shoulder. This variation is consistent with kiln placement and salt distribution rather than different makers.
The absence of impressed stamps, stenciled decoration, or capacity numbers suggests these were utilitarian jugs made for general household or farm use rather than commercial branding. The rough, unglazed bases with kiln wear and firing discoloration further support 19th-century production. The applied handles and proportions are typical of Midwestern and Eastern U.S. stoneware production rather than Southern alkaline-glazed wares, which tend to show darker ash glazes and different clay bodies.
A reasonable date range for both jugs would be mid- to late 19th century, circa 1860–1890. Their smaller size suggests use for liquids such as vinegar, molasses, or spirits, or for kitchen storage rather than bulk transport. While an exact pottery attribution is not possible without markings, these are representative examples of everyday American stoneware from the post–Civil War period, valued more for form, surface character, and honest wear than for specific maker identification.
