Description
This figural sculpture depicts a nude female allegorical figure emerging from stylized water forms and is titled Naissance de la Perle (“Birth of the Pearl”), as indicated by the gilt plaque affixed to the front of the base. The figure is shown in a dynamic, forward-moving pose, with flowing hair and drapery suggesting motion and wind, a composition commonly associated with classical revival and Art Nouveau–influenced decorative sculpture.
The body of the sculpture is cast in metal with a dark brown patina. While the specific metal type cannot be confirmed, the weight, surface finish, and molded detailing are consistent with decorative metal sculpture rather than stone or composite resin. The figure is mounted to a polished green marble base, which is finished with a gilt metal trim ring and title plaque, providing both visual contrast and structural support.
Stylistically, this work aligns with French-inspired allegorical sculpture popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The absence of an artist’s signature, foundry stamp, or edition marking suggests the piece was produced as a decorative sculpture after a French model rather than as an individually signed fine art bronze. Based on these characteristics, it is most appropriately dated to the early to mid-20th century, circa 1920s–1940s.
The sculpture measures approximately 26 inches in height, with a base diameter of about 7 ½ inches and a widest midsection of approximately 9 inches. Overall condition appears consistent with age and display, showing surface wear and patina variation typical of metal sculpture from this period. The marble base shows light handling marks, and the plaque remains securely attached.
Note: Due to its solid metal body this piece of art is heavy (70-80 Lbs) and not easily transported by one person. Buyers should plan accordingly and bring adequate assistance and appropriate transport for removal. Legacy of Louisville will not be able to assist with moving this piece at pickup.
