Collection of Three Antique & Vintage Irons – Asbestos Sad Iron, A.O. Williams Iron, and Wolverine “Sunny Suzy” Electric Toy Iron
This collection begins with an antique Asbestos Sad Iron, measuring approximately 4¾" long and 3¼" tall. Made between the 18901890s and early 1920s, this compact model features the classic nickel-plated shell, a detachable wooden handle, and a marked cast-iron base reading “ASBESTOS SAD IRON.” These irons were designed to hold heat longer using an insulated asbestos-lined core—a hallmark of turn-of-the-century laundry technology. Its small scale and sturdy construction make it a distinctive example from an era when household tools were built for durability and efficiency.
The second piece is an A.O. Williams antique sad iron, notable for its arched wooden handle, black frame, and thick cast-iron base. Measuring about 8" long and 5" tall, it reflects the early 20th-century American movement toward safer, better-insulated irons. The removable wooden handle and vented top latch are characteristic of A.O. Williams’ designs, which emphasized heat retention and user comfort before the widespread adoption of electric models. This iron’s craftsmanship and functional design represent the transition between coal-heated and early electric household appliances.
The third item is a Wolverine “Sunny Suzy” electric toy iron, catalog No. 304, produced in the 1950s–1960s by Wolverine Supply & Manufacturing Co. of Pittsburgh. A working 20-watt children’s appliance, it features a stamped-steel chrome body, black molded handle, and original underside markings including its UL listing and model label. Wolverine’s “Sunny Suzy” line was one of the most recognizable mid-century household toy series, giving young children miniature versions of contemporary appliances. This iron captures mid-century industrial styling in a playful format and remains highly collectible today.
Together, these three irons showcase 70 years of domestic tool evolution, from hand-heated irons of the late 19th century to insulated early-electric models and finally to mid-century miniature appliances designed for play. The collection offers visual, historical, and functional diversity, making it an excellent display set for collectors of antique tools, industrial design, or early American household history
