Description

A darkly painted coconut shell carved and painted with a single large googly eye visible, wrapped in a colorful blue, red, and orange striped fabric bandana tied at the back, with exaggerated red lips painted in a sulky pout. Aged and weathered patina throughout, giving this quirky character serious personality. The fabric wrap appears hand-applied and adds a folk art textile touch to an already eccentric piece. A standout oddball in this already odd bunch.

A tall elongated coconut shell carved into a primate face featuring deeply scored facial lines, wide-set plastic googly eyes, a carved triangular nose, and a painted red felt smile. The natural husk texture is preserved across the surface with dark pyrographic-style burn markings defining the brow and muzzle. A small wire hook protrudes from the crown for hanging display. Clean, warm tan tones make this one of the more refined pieces in the lot.

A rounder, darker coconut shell heavily painted in black and brown tones depicting a stern chimpanzee face with small black bead eyes, a carved protruding nose, and a bold red V-shaped marking across the cheeks. Metal disc ear embellishments are affixed to each side. The solemn unsmiling expression and dark coloration give this piece a dramatically different mood from its companions.

A smaller coconut shell figure sculpted in the round as a full monkey body, with a large open gaping mouth carved aggressively downward, a tuft of natural coconut fiber hair on top, and deeply burned circular eyes with expressive furrowed brows. A carved tongue or lower jaw piece juts outward from the open mouth cavity. This is the most three-dimensional and sculptural piece of the group.

A lighter tan coconut shell with a wide smiling monkey face, featuring oversized white plastic googly eyes with dark pupils, carved muzzle lines, flared nostrils, and a wide red felt grin. Clean husk texture with minimal dark staining. A metal hook is embedded at the crown. This is the most cheerful and approachable face in the collection, the crowd-pleaser of the bunch.

A darkened whole coconut with a painted monkey face featuring small black bead eyes, a flat carved nose bridge, prominent red painted lips, and a sculpted beard of real fiber material along the chin. The piece lays horizontally and is dramatically different in style from the others, appearing more human-caricature than primate. A colorful striped fabric wraps around the back of the shell completing the character.
