This well-loved Foley Food-Mill, made by Foley Mfg. Co. of Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a mid-century American kitchen staple that has clearly seen some serious sauce-making action. The tinned steel basin features a perforated bottom screen, a hand-crank mechanism with a black Bakelite knob, and a removable masher blade secured by a thumb screw -- instructions for removal are even stamped right onto the blade for your convenience. The exterior shows heavy patina and iridescent wear consistent with decades of hard use, and the two hook-style feet keep it perched over any pot or bowl with ease. A true piece of American culinary history that still turns and strains like a champ.
The second piece is a clean and bright aluminum cone-shaped food strainer -- sometimes called a chinois or food cone -- seated in a four-legged wire stand that holds it elevated over a catching vessel. The cone body is densely perforated for fine straining of stocks, sauces, jams, and purees, and the wide rimmed collar sits securely on the stand. Included is a turned wooden pestle with a rounded working end and a comfortable handle, used to press food through the cone. This strainer shows minimal wear and appears to be in excellent functional condition.
