This elegant sterling silver brides basket was crafted by Lebkuecher & Co. of Newark, New Jersey, a respected American silversmithing firm active from 1896 to 1931. The piece features a tall, flared trumpet-form body, a broad decorative rim, and its original swing handle, all supported by a weighted sterling foot. This form—popular in the early 20th century—was traditionally used as a wedding or floral centerpiece, making it both functional and deeply tied to decorative tableware traditions of the time. The underside bears the Lebkuecher hallmark, along with “STERLING,” “WEIGHTED BASE,” and model number 1884-B.
Dating this piece places it firmly within the 1920–1930 period, a time when American silver manufacturers widely adopted weighted construction and modernized hallmark styles. The clean sans-serif stamping and model numbering align with Lebkuecher’s late-era production, which combined refined craftsmanship with the practicality of weighted designs. Despite surface tarnish and patina consistent with age, the basket retains a graceful silhouette and well-preserved detailing around the rim and handle.
Measuring approximately 8 1/4 inches tall to the rim, 5 1/2 inches across the top, and 4 inches across the foot, this basket displays beautifully as a vintage decorative accent or centerpiece. Its classic proportions and historical significance make it appealing to collectors of American sterling, wedding memorabilia, or early 20th-century silver forms. It remains a fine example of Lebkuecher & Co.’s later sterling work and an attractive representation of the brides basket tradition.
