This is an antique or vintage two-tone stoneware crock jug, commonly referred to as a “whiskey” or “moonshine” jug. It measures approximately 8 inches in diameter and 10 inches tall, a size consistent with a one-gallon capacity and typical of utilitarian stoneware vessels produced for everyday use.
The jug is made of durable, high-fired stoneware and features a light off-white or cream-colored salt glaze covering the body, with a darker glaze at the rim and neck. It retains its wire bail handle with a turned wooden grip, a practical design intended for carrying and transport. A cork stopper is present.
Vessels of this form were widely used from the late 19th through the mid-20th centuries for storing and transporting liquids such as water, milk, molasses, syrup, and distilled spirits. Their simple construction and sturdy materials made them well suited for both household and commercial use.
While the jug is unmarked and cannot be attributed to a specific maker, the glazing style, handle configuration, and overall form are consistent with examples produced from the late 1800s through the early to mid-1900s. The use of stoneware containers of this type declined after the 1950s as glass and plastic alternatives became more common.
