    Description

This framed print depicts a young boy seated in profile, dressed in traditional European-style clothing with short trousers, suspenders, and a neck scarf. He holds a small toy train at his side, reinforcing the theme suggested by the title, “Der kleine Eisenbahner.” The child’s expression is soft and contemplative, rendered with delicate shading and gentle tonal transitions. The background is minimally defined, allowing the figure and toy to remain the focal point of the composition.

The image is a reproduction after the 1938 illustration by Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel (1909–1946), whose drawings of children became internationally recognized through licensed prints and figurines. The signature “Hummel ’38” appears within the image and is printed as part of the reproduction. The work is presented under glass in a gold-toned molded frame consistent with late 20th-century framing styles. The piece measures approximately 19 1/2 inches wide by 25 1/4 inches tall overall, including the frame.

Hummel’s original illustrations were created in watercolor and ink and later reproduced in various print formats for the American and European markets. This example represents a mid-20th-century licensed print, likely produced during the 1960s–1970s when Hummel imagery experienced peak popularity in the United States. The sentimental subject matter and soft palette are characteristic of her early work and remain widely recognizable among collectors.

The reverse retains a paper backing with a framer’s stamp from B & B Frame Gallery, Arcanum, Ohio, dated November 29, 1978. The backing and construction confirm it was custom framed during that period, though the print itself may predate the framing. This piece represents a classic example of a late 20th-century framed Hummel reproduction, suitable for collectors of Hummel imagery or traditional decorative art.
