Description

This spectacular Grandmother's Fan pattern quilt is a living scrapbook of vintage fabrics, featuring dozens of cheerful fan blocks pieced from an extraordinary variety of prints including florals, calicoes, geometrics, and solids in every color of the rainbow set against a crisp white background. The hand quilting is meticulous and dense, with decorative stitching throughout the white sashing and border areas that speaks to serious skill and patience from the maker. The fabrics strongly suggest a 1930s to 1940s origin, consistent with the feedsack and Depression-era cotton prints commonly used in scrappy quilts of that period, and the quilt presents beautifully from a distance with vibrant color retention throughout the pieced blocks. Condition notes are honest and important: the binding shows wear and fraying in at least one section, there is some light yellowing and staining visible on the white areas particularly near the borders, and the backing fabric shows the soft crinkled character of aged cotton -- all consistent with a well-loved antique textile that would benefit from gentle conservation cleaning.
