This vintage Ludwig & Ludwig marching drum dates to the late 1920s or 1930s and displays many hallmark features of early American drum craftsmanship. Ludwig & Ludwig—founded in 1909 by William F. Ludwig Sr. and his brother Theobald—was known for producing high-quality professional percussion instruments before transitioning into the WFL and later Ludwig Drum Company eras. The hardware, finish, and construction all point to an authentic pre-WWII example.
Measuring approximately 16 inches in diameter and 14.5 inches tall, this drum features classic single-tension nickel-plated hardware, T-rods, and claws typical of the period. The red painted finish is consistent with lacquered shells produced during this era, which were commonly made from mahogany or maple. A Ludwig & Ludwig stamped washer is visible on the tension hardware, confirming its early manufacture.
This piece shows age-appropriate wear, and the bottom drum head is broken, as pictured. It remains an excellent display piece for percussion collectors, vintage instrument enthusiasts, or anyone interested in early 20th-century American music history.
