Up for auction is a magnificent example of post-war German horology: an authentic Vintage 8-Day Cuckoo Clockmanufactured by the renowned August Schatz & Söhne (Jahresuhrenfabrik). Originating from Triberg in the legendary Black Forest region of Germany, this highly collectible piece dates back to the early-to-mid 1950s. The mechanical inner brass movement features the crisp, authentic "Jahresuhrenfabrik Germany" stamp alongside the "50" designator, marking the 1950 introduction of this robust mechanism. Complete with its original hanging gold foil quality seal, a beautiful raised brass "Schatz 8 Day" emblem on the front, and its signature little blue cuckoo bird tucked inside the hatch, this clock is a true treasure for collectors of European antiquities.
The exterior showcases the timeless "Hunter/Maple Leaf" traditional aesthetic, boasting a beautifully structured case intricately hand-carved from native Lindenwood (Basswood). The main wooden clock housing stands at approximately 13 inches tall (excluding weights and pendulum) and 8 inches wide., making it the perfect statement size for any room. The rich, dark brown facade is adorned with deeply sculpted maple leaves and a prominent topping bird carving that frames the dark clock dial. The face is detailed with classic applied Roman numerals and elegant, light-stained carved hands. This auction includes the main clock housing, the matching wooden leaf pendulum, thn chain, and the two heavy, highly detailed cast-iron pinecone weights required to run the luxury 8-day mechanical movement.
As an honest vintage item with over 70 years of history, it is in beautiful cosmetic shape with one notable structural point: there is a tight, vertical crack along the lower grain line on the front bottom leaf. This appears to be an older, stable repair—a incredibly common trait for authentic Black Forest clocks due to decades of natural wood expansion and the heavy downward pull of the cast-iron weights. The crack is secure, blending naturally into the hand-carved aesthetic, and does not interfere with the internal pendulum space. Bid with confidence on this gorgeous piece of German craftsmanship that is ready to bring historic warmth and character to its next home!
The clock measures 9 inches wide and 13 inches tall.
