This captivating, original lithograph by the acclaimed Russian-born Jewish artist Abel Pann (1883–1963) beautifully illustrates a poignant scene from Genesis 21:14. Titled Hagar and Ishmael (The Journey Continues), the artwork depicts Abraham’s handmaid, Hagar, wandering into the wilderness of Beer-sheba alongside her young son, Ishmael. Carrying a water vessel on her head and leading Ishmael by the hand, the figures are rendered with the deep cultural authenticity for which Pann is famous. To capture the look of true biblical pioneers, Pann famously cast local Yemenite and Bedouin populations in Jerusalem as his artistic models, infusing the traditional narrative with vibrant regional realism.
The lithograph features Abel Pann’s distinct cursive signature printed within the matrix in the lower-left corner, as visible in IMG_5199.jpg. This piece stems from Pann’s historic graphic works executed during his tenure in Jerusalem, where he personally pioneered the region’s first lithographic press to construct his iconic biblical portfolios, such as The Five Books of Moses. His delicate use of line and tone brings out a haunting psychological depth, heightening the emotional and vulnerable tone of the figures' exile.
Adding a remarkable historical layer to this specific piece is the custom matte dedication. Penned three years after the artist's passing, the matte features a handwritten inscription in both Hebrew and Arabic, dated October 19, 1966 ("19.X.66"). It translates to "From Aviv in the Holy Land" ("מאביב בארץ הקדושה" / "من افيف في الارض المقدسة"), indicating it was presented as a significant cultural keepsake or personal gift in mid-century Israel.
The piece is housed in an elegant, ornate gold-finished wooden frame with a multi-tiered linen matte layout that beautifully complements the artwork's desert tones. The entire framed and matted piece measures 18 1/4 x 16 1/4 inches. This unique item is an exceptional acquisition for collectors of early Israeli art, Jewish heritage pieces, or twentieth-century master printmaking.
