This vintage gasoline blow torch is branded “Hercules,” a well-known house brand sold through Sears, Roebuck & Co. during the early to mid-20th century. While marketed under the Hercules name, examples like this were commonly manufactured by major torch makers such as Otto Bernz Co. or Clayton & Lambert. The design, embossed “HERCULES” marking, and horizontal burner assembly are consistent with Sears catalog offerings dating to the 1930s through the 1940s.
Constructed with a heavy brass or bronze fuel tank, the torch displays an aged verdigris patina and oxidation typical of long-term storage and workshop use. The burner assembly is cast iron and steel, built to withstand high operating temperatures, while the black ribbed handle appears to be Bakelite, a popular heat-resistant material of the era. The torch retains its original control wheel, pump assembly, and hanging hook at the top of the burner tube.
Gasoline blow torches like this were widely used by plumbers, mechanics, roofers, tinsmiths, and machinists for soldering, heating pipe joints, loosening rusted hardware, and other repair work before the widespread adoption of propane torches. Today, these early torches are sought after for industrial décor, antique tool collections, and steampunk-style displays.
