This classic American stoneware shoulder jug was produced by Red Wing Union Stoneware Company of Red Wing, Minnesota, one of the most recognized names in early 20th century utilitarian pottery. The jug features the company’s desirable blue wing trademark above a large cobalt “5,” indicating a 5-gallon capacity. Its rounded shoulder form, applied handle, and durable Bristol glaze construction reflect the practical design that made these vessels a staple in farms, homes, and general stores throughout the Midwest.
The jug dates approximately to the 1915–1930s period based on the smaller wing mark, shoulder form, and glaze style. Finished in a smooth cream-colored Bristol glaze with a dark brown glazed top and handle, this example represents the transition from earlier salt-glazed stoneware into more sanitary glazed production methods favored during the early 20th century. Large-capacity shoulder jugs such as this were commonly used for storing vinegar, cider, whiskey, oils, and other household or agricultural liquids.
This example retains a strong, clearly visible wing logo and capacity marking with good overall form and color contrast between the glazed upper section and stoneware body. The applied handle remains intact, and the vessel displays the substantial proportions associated with larger Red Wing storage pieces. Measures approximately 17 inches tall and represents a highly collectible example of American Midwest stoneware pottery.
