This Silex “Starlight” coffee carafe is a classic example of mid-century American kitchen design, featuring the popular atomic starburst motif associated with the late 1950s and early 1960s. The clear glass body is decorated with metallic gold cross-style starbursts spaced evenly around the surface. A black metal collar with reticulated cut-out cross patterns encircles the upper body, paired with a black molded handle embossed “Silex” and a matching lid topped with a wood-tone finial. The overall silhouette—wide at the base and tapering toward the neck—is characteristic of the Starlight line.
The body is constructed of heat-resistant borosilicate glass, commonly produced for Silex during this period, while the handle and lid are formed from Moldex or early Bakelite-style plastic. The pierced metal collar was both decorative and functional, allowing heat to dissipate while providing structural support. The rainbow-like patina visible on the metal band is consistent with age and repeated heat exposure. Measuring approximately 10.5 inches in height, this example corresponds to the larger 12-cup “Party Size” version rather than the smaller 8-cup model.
Production is estimated to the late 1950s to very early 1960s. Silex merged with Proctor Electric in 1960 to form Proctor-Silex; since this handle is marked solely “Silex” without the Proctor name, it likely predates or coincides with that transition. These carafes were originally marketed as coffee beverage servers and were often paired with a separate warming stand designed to hold canned heat or a small candle. The atomic star pattern and materials firmly place this piece within the mid-century modern era of American housewares design.
