Description
This is a beautifully preserved dash-style butter churn, constructed from staved hardwood planks held together with two iron barrel hoops -- the same time-honored cooperage technique used for barrels and buckets throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The tall cylindrical body features a fitted wooden lid with a center hole through which the long dasher rod passes, topped with a turned wooden finial and fitted at the bottom with a classic cross-shaped paddle that agitated the cream into butter. The interior shows authentic use wear with residue scoring on the stave walls and a tapered funnel shape, confirming this was a working farm tool and not a reproduction. A showpiece of American primitive craftsmanship, this churn displays beautifully as folk art decor and would be a standout addition to any farmhouse, primitive, or Americana collection.
